Navigating Your DOT Violation: A Step-by-Step Guide from Minor Adjustments Group, Inc.
If you’ve received a drug or alcohol violation and need to complete a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) program under DOT guidelines, don’t stress. Minor Adjustments Group, Inc., led by Michael L. Williams Jr., CADC, NCPRSS, SAP is here to guide you through each step with professionalism and care.
✅ Step 1: Choose Your SAP
Begin by designating your SAP in the FMCSA Clearinghouse - https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/ Enter “Michael L. Williams Jr.” when prompted. You’ll follow the steps outlined by FMCSA for proper submission. You can switch your SAP at this stage, but only before the initial evaluation begins.
📥 Step 2: SAP Confirmation
Once we accept your designation, we’ll securely enter your profile into the Clearinghouse. Need to make a change? It’s only possible if your evaluation hasn’t yet started.
🎥 Step 3: Initial Virtual SAP Evaluation
Your initial evaluation will take place either in person or virtually. If it's in person, you’ll be provided with the meeting location. If virtual, you’ll receive a Zoom link and connect with Michael for approximately one hour. Please ensure you have a device with a working camera (such as a phone, tablet, or laptop).
Once your situation is assessed, you'll be given a customized recovery plan.
Please note: The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires SAPs to refer clients to external providers for education and recommendation services. You are responsible for completing these services independently, and any fees associated with them are separate.
Minor Adjustments Group, Inc. is committed to making these resources as accessible and affordable as possible, emphasizing virtual options wherever they are available.
📋 Step 4: Completion & Return-to-Duty Eligibility
Once your external requirements are fulfilled, we’ll schedule a follow-up session. If you’ve successfully met all conditions, Michael will update the Clearinghouse and green-light you for RTD testing.
🧪 Step 5: RTD Testing Process
Your RTD drug test must produce a negative result. You can test through your employer or, if you're self-employed, via a CTPA (Consortium/Third-Party Administrator). Be sure your test is correctly labeled as "Return-to-Duty" for accurate reporting.
📅 Step 6: Follow-Up Testing Plan
Your SAP report will outline a follow-up testing schedule, typically consisting of 6 random tests within 12 months. These are conducted under direct observation. Your employer (or DER) must ensure no predictable pattern and maintain compliance with DOT regulations.
If you switch employers before completing the final test, your new employer continues where the plan is left off. The final employer overseeing the last test will report completion to the Clearinghouse (unless the violation predates the system).
